The Alliance of AIDS Services – Carolinas and the Human Rights Campaign – Carolinas are proud to present a special Drag Bingo, HRC Style! This Drag Bingo will be held at the Raleigh Convention Center in downtown Raleigh, NC. Please check out all of the events that HRC Carolinas has scheduled for this special 2010 HRC GALA Weekend.

The long-awaited and anxiously-sought “Red Ribbon” AIDS Awareness license plate is now going to become a reality! After the Alliance receives 300 applications and checks for $25 (or $55 for personalized), the DMV will produce and mail out the plates, and I hope that many of us will be driving around with them. I am excited that North Carolina is only one of a small handful of states who has such a plate, and I’m looking forward to using this new venue to remind the public that AIDS is not over.

The Kroger Gift Card Program | A Quick and Easy Fundraiser for the Alliance!

The Kroger Cares Gift Card Program is an “effortless fundraiser” that makes it easy to raise money for the Alliance through your regular weekly grocery trip to Kroger. All you need is the specially-bar-coded gift card (that can be reloaded at any Kroger customer service desk), and then use it to pay for your groceries. As a charitable gift, Kroger gives the Alliance 5% of the money placed on our gift cards. It costs you nothing—just the few seconds it takes you to reload. The cards never expire and you can use it in addition to your Kroger Plus card. As of December 31, 2009, the Alliance has earned $1,375!

In order to participate in the Alliance’s Kroger Gift Card Program, you’ll need to get a card directly from the Alliance, which is bar-coded and programmed for us … cards that you purchase directly from a Kroger store are not included in this fundraiser. Send an e-mail to Deborah Sorin, a member of the Alliance’s Board of Directors, at deborahs@gmail.com. Be sure to include your mailing address so you can receive the specially-bar-coded Kroger Gift Card and detailed instructions.

The Alliance receives 5% of all money placed on our Kroger Gift Cards—which means that for every $5,000 of groceries purchased at Kroger, the Alliance earns $250 in cash. This money is a gift from Kroger and does not cost gift card users anything. Please consider getting extra cards to give to friends who could be convinced to help our work in the community.

In these last 12 months, we have lived through global wars, failing economies and trying political elections. Throughout these dynamic struggles, more than 4 million people worldwide became infected with HIV. In that same period, 2.8 million people died from AIDS. You can make a difference in the lives of the more than 31,000 North Carolinians living with HIV by making a donation to The Alliance of AIDS Services • Carolina.

Please consider making a donation to our ‘We Remember’ campaign.

The face of AIDS continues to change—more than 42% of our clients are gay men; about 40% of our clients are women; 60% of them have children; and 100% are beneath the federal poverty line. Their challenges are no different than countless other people in our community who are in need—except for you. You can be the change in their life; you can touch our clients in very tangible ways. Food, shelter, medicine, and life skills to cope and survive … indeed you can change a life today.

At the Alliance we focus on care as well as prevention. Step one in prevention is education. With your help we teach more than 1,500 sessions reaching more than 20,000 people in Durham, Johnston, Orange and Wake Counties. We test nearly 2,000 people, thereby identifying infections early enough to slow the progression of the disease. You are the key to halting the impact of HIV in our community. Education, condoms, testing, connecting to resources … indeed you can change a life today.
